Paul’s Family Restaurant, a staple in Elgin for over six decades, was celebrated as an “institution” by locals and officials on Friday. The gathering included around 75 people, comprising friends, family, and local dignitaries, at the restaurant’s corner location on Lawrence Avenue and McLean Boulevard to mark its 65th year.
State Senator Cristina Castro highlighted the importance of Paul’s Family Restaurant by reading an Illinois Senate proclamation. Her sentiments emphasized the restaurant’s significance, akin to “coming home to your family.” This notion was echoed by Elaine Paul, the current owner, who expressed emotion as Sen. Castro shared her personal memories of the establishment.
Mayor David Kaptain also reminisced about advice from a consultant, noting that restaurants typically last about two years. An establishment lasting five years earns the status of an “institution,” yet Paul’s has far surpassed that benchmark with its 65 years of successful operation.
The origins of Paul’s Family Restaurant trace back to 1961 when Greek immigrants John and Stella Paul opened the Douglas Coffee Shop on Division Street in Elgin. With only $200 at their disposal, they launched their 19-seat eatery. Eventually, the restaurant moved to its current address at 1300 Lawrence Ave.
Elaine Paul, their daughter, took ownership in the mid-1990s when her parents considered retirement. As a Northwestern University alumna with a law career in Washington, D.C., she felt compelled to retain the restaurant’s operation in the family rather than sell it to outsiders. “I wasn’t ready to see it go to someone else,” she said, referencing her commitment that has continued for over 30 years.
Elaine Paul reflects on the legacy of her parents, noting the challenges exacerbated by the pandemic. Despite difficulties, she remains dedicated to honoring the accomplishments of her parents, expressing “It’s really been a labor of love.” Her pride is evident in the tribute to her parents’ vision and efforts.
John Paul, at 97 years old, was unable to attend the anniversary celebration due to health issues. Diagnosed with stage 1 colorectal cancer recently, his condition has fluctuated. Although travel limitations restricted his attendance on Friday, Elaine Paul conveyed her continuing admiration for him and the ongoing journey to maintain the restaurant.
