Upon arrival, Freedom was quickly surrounded by a group of spectators, with security stepping in to offer protection.
Freedom wore a shirt displaying the definition of “woman,” highlighting the ongoing debate on gender eligibility in the WNBA. He posted a video of the confrontation on social media, noting, “We are getting attacked before the @WNBA game in Chicago.” The video showed one fan making an obscene gesture towards Freedom and another taking a verbal jab at his professional career.
Freedom, who has played over 700 NBA games, is accustomed to criticism. His outspoken opposition to human rights abuses by the Chinese Communist Party cost him his NBA career. Now, he advocates for female athletes, emphasizing that biological males should not compete in women’s sports.
Recently, Freedom declared his eligibility for the WNBA Draft in 2027. This move challenges the league’s unclear gender eligibility rules and could pave the way for men to claim roster spots. Royce White, another former NBA player, also declared for the draft following Freedom’s announcement.
During an interview with former Auburn coach Bruce Pearl, Freedom explained his motives. He asserted that by league rules, identifying as female would allow him to play, illustrating the potential awkwardness of a male NBA player participating in the women’s league.
