Students returning to Evergreen Park Community High School will discover a vibrant new mural that blends art and science. During their summer break, a group of students dedicated their time to completing this artwork, which now decorates the school’s science wing.
Ava Chandler, an incoming senior with interests in both art and science, initiated the project. Desiring a scientific theme, she pitched the idea to art teacher Tom Guerra, who, along with fellow students, supported the concept. Chandler expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I’m passionate about science and thought combining it with art would showcase the interconnectedness of different scientific disciplines.”
The mural features elements from the periodic table, images symbolizing Sir Isaac Newton, scientific equations, and an evolution sequence. Additionally, it includes motifs such as the DNA helix, parts of a dinosaur, and an asteroid. The creative process transformed summer school sessions into enjoyable experiences for the students involved.
Juliana Bosch, who graduated recently and aims to study character design at DePaul University, emphasized their commitment to detail, ensuring the mural’s accuracy. “My fascination with chemistry and its interactions fueled my interest in this project. We included precise details to reflect scientific principles accurately,” she stated.
Izabella Rodriguez-Acevedo, also a senior, reflected on how painting rekindled her childhood passion. She noted, “The project seamlessly merged my love for art and science.”
Other contributors—Jax Olson, Natalia Mosely, Danny Sommerio, and Wilbur Smith—joined Chandler and Rodriguez-Acevedo in the creative endeavor. A grant from the EPCHS Foundation funded the project, while Rob Rymek, an industrial technology teacher, constructed the mural’s frame.
Tom Guerra, a 2011 graduate of Evergreen Park Community High School, played a mentoring role. Having participated in mural projects as a student himself, he valued the opportunity to guide the next generation. “Art students often miss out on the recognition athletes receive. Painting this mural allows them to leave a lasting mark on the school,” Guerra explained.
By engaging in this project, Evergreen Park students have united art and science, offering their peers a unique and educational visual experience.
