If you opt for bottled water thinking it’s cleaner or safer than tap water, recent research suggests reconsideration may be warranted. A new study reveals that bottled water can contain up to 100 times more plastic than earlier believed. Nanoplastics, which are extremely fine plastic particles, are present in these waters. These particles, one-thousandth the average width of a human hair, can pass through the digestive tract or lungs, potentially entering the bloodstream. Their presence allows synthetic chemicals to spread throughout the body.
The research indicates a liter of bottled water from stores holds an average of 240,000 plastic particles comprising seven different plastic types, with 90% being nanoplastics. Experts suggest that to decrease exposure to these plastic particles, opting for filtered tap water in a stainless steel or glass bottle is advisable.
