Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed a worrying rise in vaccine exemptions among American kindergarteners for the 2025-26 school year. The percentage of students exempted from at least one vaccine increased to 4.2%, up from 3.6% the previous year.
The decline in vaccination coverage is noticeable across several vaccines, including the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis), poliovirus, and varicella (chickenpox). MMR vaccination rates dropped to 92.4%, below the 95% immunity threshold deemed necessary to prevent widespread outbreaks.
This trend comes at a time when the U.S. is experiencing its most severe measles outbreak in 35 years. Vaccination rates have been declining since the pre-pandemic 2019-20 school year when they stood at 95.2%.
Although all states and the District of Columbia mandate certain vaccinations for public school attendance, exemptions for reasons such as religious or philosophical beliefs are permitted. Alarmingly, non-medical exemptions are increasing across various states.
