Democrats’ chances of retaining the Wisconsin governor’s seat increased significantly in prediction markets following the gubernatorial primary. Moderate Democrat David Crowley emerged victorious over progressive state Representative Francesca Hong. Crowley, aiming to be Wisconsin’s first Black governor, narrowly defeated Hong. He positioned himself as the candidate best suited to beat U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany, the Republican primary winner backed by former President Donald Trump.
Crowley re-entered the race in July after initially dropping out, aided by outgoing Democratic Governor Tony Evers’ endorsement. Prediction markets had previously favored Republicans leading up to the primary, as Hong was expected to win the nomination. Despite public polls indicating her advantage, the Associated Press declared Crowley the winner, leading to renewed Democratic favorability in November’s gubernatorial race.
By 8 a.m. Eastern, the Kashi prediction market gave Democrats a 78% chance of keeping the governor’s office, up from 39.4% on Sunday. Republicans’ odds decreased to 22%, down from 61.8% earlier. Similarly, Polymarket showed Democrats with a 77% probability of winning, rising from 41%, while Republican odds dropped to 22% from 51% on Monday. These markets reflect current trader sentiment but are not always precise predictions.
Analysts, such as the Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball, classify the Wisconsin race as a toss-up. Both Crowley and Tiffany must appeal to independents and moderate voters, who are crucial in this swing state known for close contests.
“Crowley focuses on uniting people and gaining support from all political backgrounds, believing Wisconsin thrives through cooperation,” Garren Randolph, his campaign manager, stated post-victory.
Tiffany addressed diverse political identities in his victory speech, inviting various voter groups to join his movement for future opportunities for their offspring.
Crowley’s success is linked to mainstream Democratic support, concerned about the electability of left-wing candidates like Hong against Republican opposition. Establishment Democrats feared Hong’s platform might struggle with moderates and independents.
Jim Kessler of Third Way noted the structural challenges of governor’s races versus legislative contests regarding voter ideology and expectations. Despite energizing the progressive base, major figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders did not endorse Hong, focusing instead on broader congressional objectives.
