Colombia’s Search and Rescue Efforts After Devastating Earthquake

Earthquake Strikes Western Colombia

Early Tuesday, the focus in western Colombia was on search and rescue efforts following a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake. The powerful tremor caused significant destruction and loss of life. At least 111 people have been confirmed dead, and many remain trapped under debris from damaged and destroyed buildings.

The earthquake hit several cities and towns, including Cali, Quibdo, and Pereira. About 1,600 buildings were reported damaged or collapsed, prompting families to use citizen-run websites to share information about missing loved ones. By Monday night, the number of missing individuals was over 2,700.

Impact on Choco and Response Efforts

The epicenter was in Choco, a region known for its poverty and neglect. Access is only possible by boat, through the jungle, or by air. President Abelardo de la Espriella visited its capital, Quibdo, to assess the situation. He declared a commitment to ensuring Choco will no longer be forgotten.

The new president faced his first major test, dealing with the aftermath of the disaster. De la Espriella has been divisive due to his stance against criminal groups. He mobilized the military and police to assist in the response, deploying engineers, rescue personnel, and search dogs.

De la Espriella announced support measures, including rental subsidies for those whose homes were damaged, allowing them to undertake repairs.

Scenes of Destruction and Recovery

The aftermath has seen residents, police, soldiers, and rescue workers comb through rubble, helping to remove concrete and debris. Rescue teams have been working tirelessly to locate survivors. Scenes of destruction in Cali include crushed vehicles and damaged structures.

People evacuated hospitals and left their homes in fear as the quake’s impact was felt in various locations, including Bogota. The government continues to organize and lead response efforts to alleviate the widespread destruction and suffering.
