Former NFL quarterback Derek Carr announced his retirement from professional football after the 2024 season, leaving fans and analysts surprised. Known for his impressive career with the Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints, Carr had built a reputation as a skilled quarterback with multiple accolades.
Despite numerous speculations that he might return to the NFL to support teams in need of quarterbacks, Carr remained retired until recently. On Monday, UCLA’s football team revealed that Carr had been appointed as a special advisor to Bob Chesney, their new head coach.
In a press release, Carr expressed his enthusiasm for the role, noting his long-standing respect for UCLA’s general manager, Darrick Yray. He stated,
I’ve known Darrick for a long time and have great respect for the work he’s done throughout his career. The opportunity to help coach Chesney, the staff and the quarterbacks at UCLA was one that really excited me. I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences and helping support the program in any way I can.
Carr’s involvement with UCLA will include assisting with game-planning strategies and working directly with the team’s quarterbacks, according to the university.
During Carr’s professional career spanning 11 years in the NFL, he achieved remarkable statistics, including 41,245 passing yards, 257 touchdowns, and 112 interceptions, resulting in a passer rating of 92.8. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Carr’s college tenure at Fresno State featured exceptional performances.
While at Fresno State, Carr accumulated 12,843 passing yards, 113 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions over four seasons, starting in three. He notably led Fresno State to a 20-6 record in his last two seasons. His final year stood out with 5,083 passing yards, 50 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions.
Carr earned significant recognition during his college career, becoming a two-time Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year. He also received the 2013 Sammy Baugh Trophy, an award honoring the nation’s leading passer.
