Michael ‘Ace’ Allegretti was the heart behind the beloved Allegretti’s Bakery in Norridge. Known for his Italian delicacies and warm spirit, he passed away at 74. Ace dedicated himself to the bakery until his last day. Located at 7717 W. Lawrence Avenue, Allegretti’s was a cherished spot in the community for over six decades, attracting locals with treats like chocolate donuts, zeppole, and chocolate pound cake.
Allegretti’s legacy started after World War II when he founded the bakery in Chicago after serving as a cook in the U.S. Army. His family plans to continue the bakery, honoring his legacy. The Allegrettis worked together to make the bakery known for items such as sfogliatelle, cannoli, pasticciotto, and baba rum. Using only the freshest ingredients, they maintained a high standard of customer service, which endeared them to many loyal patrons.
Ace’s sister, Linda Ahern, spoke of his generosity and dedication to the bakery. She mentioned that thousands have expressed their condolences online. The Norridge Police Department showed their support by promising a police escort to manage the anticipated crowds at his funeral services. Ace’s chocolate ‘crack’ donuts, featured in popular media, were among his many famous creations. Linda recalled baking with her brother, deciphering their father’s recipes, which he intentionally left incomplete to prevent theft.
Loyal customer Angela Vitale, who has frequented the bakery for over 50 years, praised Ace’s creations and his friendliness. The bakery offered desserts reminiscent of those in Palermo, thrilling Italian-born locals like herself and her late husband, Sal. Ace and Sal shared a close bond over cups of espresso and tasty desserts.
Ace supported community members, sharing his generosity when they experienced losses. Linda recalled Ace’s love for children, as he would dress as Santa or a clown for festive occasions. His niece fondly remembered Ace’s willingness to fulfill their childhood wishes.
Angela Vitale recounted her visits to the bakery, where Ace often made sure to greet her and check on her family. His warmth and care inspired lasting memories for her family. Ace’s wake was scheduled for August 11 at Cumberland Chapels, with a funeral mass on August 12 at St. Eugene Catholic Church.
