Event Overview
On Saturday and Sunday, over one million spectators are anticipated to gather along the Chicago lakefront for the annual Air and Water Show. The event will feature performances by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team, and various civilian and military aircraft.
Admission and Location
The event is open to the public at no cost. North Avenue Beach serves as the primary location for the show, though good views are available from Ohio Street Beach to Oak Street Beach along the lakefront. Alternative, less crowded spots include nearby parks and playing fields.
Schedule
The show will run from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Rehearsals are set for Friday but may change based on weather conditions. The beaches will open at 6 a.m. Note that there are no public seating areas and parking is unavailable at North Avenue Beach.
Performers
- U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds: This team, with a history dating back 73 years, consists of over 120 members and performs with eight F-16 Fighting Falcons.
- U.S. Army Golden Knights: Known for jumps into Lake Michigan since the 1960s, this team has collaborated with notable figures like David Ross and Vince Vaughn.
- Additional Military Displays: C-17 Globemaster and F-22 Raptor demonstrations will be shown, along with performances by other military units including the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard.
- Civilian Participants: The lineup includes Chicago Fire Department’s Air and Sea Rescue Unit, Kevin Coleman, Susan Dacy, Ed “Hamster” Hamill, and Trojan Phlyers.
Access and Transportation
Pedestrian access is via bridges and tunnels at various streets including Fullerton Avenue and North Avenue Beach. Public transit offers extra service with recommended use of the Regional Transportation Authority’s Trip Planner. The CTA will have additional service; however, the No. 72 North Avenue bus will be rerouted. Metra will provide extra service on several lines. Note that alcohol is prohibited and bicycles might face restrictions. Bikes are allowed on the beach, and Divvy bikes can be rented nearby. Parking at show central is unavailable but options exist, such as Millennium Garages and spots coordinated by Spothero.
What to Bring and Weather
- You may bring binoculars, bottled water, chairs, coolers, earplugs, blankets, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
- Leave alcohol, balloons, drones, fireworks, illegal substances, pets, tents, and weapons at home.
The National Weather Service anticipates hot and humid weather with temperatures in the upper 70s and a chance of showers.
Contingencies for Rain
In the event of severe weather, performances may be delayed or shortened. Temporary shelters are accessible near underpasses and pedways.
Viewing Takeoffs and Listening to Coverage
Spectators can watch aircraft take off and land at Gary/Chicago International Airport for a fee. The show, narrated by Herb Hunter, can be heard on WBBM-AM 780 and 105.9 FM. Audio descriptions for the visually impaired will also be available on Zoom.
Safety Information
If a safety issue arises, use the vertical green pole markers as a reference point for emergency services or to inform others of your location.
