After more than a decade as an assistant, Mike LaFleur steps into the role of an NFL head coach. His journey began with the Cleveland Browns in 2014 as an offensive intern. The following year, he advanced to an offensive assistant with the Atlanta Falcons. By 2017, LaFleur took on significant responsibilities with the San Francisco 49ers as a passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach.
In 2021, he transitioned to the New York Jets as an offensive coordinator. He then held the same position with the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. Now, he is at the helm with the Arizona Cardinals.
Before his first game with the Cardinals, Mike received a surprise visit from his brother Matt LaFleur, head coach of the Green Bay Packers. Despite the usual sibling banter, a heartfelt exchange was witnessed by NBC viewers.
“Hey man, you’ve earned this opportunity. Go let it rip, have fun, and I’m proud of you buddy. I love you, man,”said Matt.
Mike responded with gratitude, noting his unexpected emotions, I did not expect that right there, I appreciate that, guys. That’s pretty cool. I appreciate that. Now you’ve got me a little emotional.
The Hall of Fame game, although filled with positive moments, ended with a narrow loss for the Cardinals, 33-30, against the Carolina Panthers. Most of the game featured second- and third-string players.
If Mike can replicate his brother Matt’s success, he will likely be satisfied. Matt LaFleur has achieved a 76-40-1 record over seven seasons with the Packers, securing six playoff appearances, four seasons with double-digit wins, three division titles, and two NFC Championship Game appearances.
