Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee was defeated in a primary challenge by Charlie Hatcher, a farmer and former commissioner of agriculture. This primary election, though not widely anticipated, reflected significant dynamics within the Republican Party.

The contest also drew attention and funds for its environmental policy implications. The Invest in Tomorrow Coalition super PAC spent around $2 million against Ogles, favoring Hatcher. This spending was part of the $6.7 million raised by the group, highlighting their substantial investment in this district.
“When you have a group spending roughly $2 million in a Republican primary, that tells you how much money they’re making off of government subsidies,” Ogles commented in an interview.
A Federal Election Commission review showed Chris Larsen, chairman of Ripple, as the major financier behind the super PAC. Larsen is known for his substantial donations to Democratic causes.
Ogles believes his stance against renewable energy investments and his close ties to Trump made him a target. He noted his plain-speaking approach and loyalty to Trump as factors in the opposition he faced.
Charlie Hatcher positioned himself as a practical problem-solver, emphasizing his agricultural background and support for Trump and Speaker Johnson’s agenda. Governor Lee endorsed Hatcher, citing his conservative values and dedication.
Trump reaffirmed his support for Ogles, praising him as an influential congressman and ally. However, the primary results set the stage for Hatcher, who now moves into a general election where he is preferred to win.
