President Donald Trump has urged lawmakers to pass the Protect College Sports Act before Congress goes on recess. He addressed over 120 athletes, coaches, and staff from Team USA during a White House celebration, highlighting the significant contributions from collegiate athletics to American Olympic success.
Trump emphasized the importance of the collegiate athletic system as a key driver of Olympic dominance. He urged bipartisan cooperation in Congress to pass the bill, which he pledged to sign immediately upon reaching his desk. He stated, “We have to get that done. If we don’t, we’re very foolish. Nobody knows what will happen. We’re in Never-Never Land.”

Making efforts to protect sporting traditions, Trump’s administration claims victories in safeguarding women’s and college sports. They have worked to secure federal legislation that offers a framework for college athletics, particularly regarding NIL compensation and the transfer portal.
While the bill has faced hurdles in the Senate, notably due to an amendment filed by three Republican senators, progress is anticipated. Senators including Josh Hawley have expressed concern that the bill might overturn state laws preventing biological males from participating in women’s sports.
The current language of the bill could override state laws on athlete eligibility, prompting senators to clarify the legal framework through an amendment. “I’ve reviewed the current draft…and I am very concerned it preempts Missouri’s law banning men in women’s sports,” Hawley stated.
