Republican Sen. Susan Collins has announced her intent to oppose President Donald Trump’s nominee, Todd Blanche. Despite her stance, committee Republicans largely support the nomination. The proceedings included critiques from progressive Democrats like Sen. Cory Booker.
Sen. John Fetterman clearly stated his refusal to support Blanche for the role of attorney general. In a podcast appearance with comedian Jon Stewart, Fetterman criticized the Democrats’ lack of action in using the filibuster against Trump’s Cabinet nominees. He clarified that he does not see Blanche as the right choice for the job.

Fetterman has historically voted for some of Trump’s Cabinet choices, including his support for Pam Bondi as attorney general and Markwayne Mullin for Homeland Security secretary. However, he will not support Blanche, potentially leading to fewer votes than Bondi received during her confirmation.
Sen. Susan Collins cited concerns about Blanche’s impact on the Department of Justice’s independence as her reason for opposition. Despite voting for Blanche as assistant attorney general, she will not support his current nomination.
The Senate Judiciary Committee’s decision came on strict party lines, with a 12-10 vote. Two senators, Bill Cassidy and Lisa Murkowski, have not yet decided on their position regarding Blanche’s confirmation.
In contrast, John Cornyn and Thom Tillis, who initially opposed Blanche, have changed their votes to support him after he agreed to halt an anti-weaponization fund initiative.
