Vincent Pastore, known for his role as Salvatore Bonpensiero on HBO’s ‘The Sopranos,’ has passed away at 80. A representative confirmed his death on Saturday. Manager Robert Attermann stated that Pastore, who resided in the Bronx, New York City, died at his home. No cause of death was disclosed.
Attermann remarked, ‘To the world, he will always be remembered as the unforgettable “Big Pussy.” But to those of us who knew him, he was so much more.’
Pastore gained fame in 1999 with his portrayal of Bonpensiero, a close friend of mob boss Tony Soprano. His character was a family enforcer who eventually turned FBI informant, posing a threat to the New Jersey mob’s operations on the critically acclaimed drama.
Born in the Bronx, Pastore grew up in New Rochelle, New York. He served in the U.S. Navy and attended Pace University. His acting career included a history in the nightclub industry. After meeting Matt and Kevin Dillon, he pursued acting actively, as recounted in a 2015 appearance on ‘Good Day New York.’
Pastore’s career centered around roles in mob films and crime dramas. Notable appearances included ‘Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn.’ His standout performance in ‘The Sopranos’ across six seasons earned him fame and recognition. The Bronx Walk of Fame inducted him in 2016, acknowledging his contributions to television with comments on his complex portrayal.
“His portrayal of the complex and lovable mobster earned him widespread recognition and praise,” noted the Bronx Walk of Fame. “Pastore’s ability to bring depth and authenticity to his character contributed to the show’s success and solidified his place in television history.”
Representing Pastore for over 30 years, Attermann described him as kind and generous. ‘Vinny was one of the kindest, most generous people I have ever known,’ he shared. Pastore valued his fans and was always approachable, whether for photos or autographs.
Pastore’s enthusiasm for acting was evident in his support for young actors. He frequently offered guidance and was known for his respectful and encouraging nature.
Reflecting on his relationship with Pastore, Attermann expressed, ‘I will miss his friendship, his loyalty, his humor, and his generosity. May his memory be a blessing.’
