When committees aim to harm Republican reputations, networks deem every action newsworthy. A prime example is former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s January 6 Committee, which lacked a Republican counterbalance.
Conversely, when committees attempt to hold Democrats accountable for government overreach, networks often disregard these activities. On July 25, Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul disclosed over 1,100 pages of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s personal diary, which spanned from 2019 to 2022. These entries were taken from Fauci’s government computer.
Two days after this release, “CBS Evening News” provided a brief 24-second report. No further coverage arose until Fauci was due to appear before Paul’s committee.

The contents of Fauci’s diary were noteworthy. Early entries revealed he did not believe COVID emerged from Wuhan wet markets. Despite this, he vocally dismissed the lab-leak theory in 2020. Fauci’s interactions with media members were also detailed, showcasing friendships with CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.
ABC’s George Stephanopoulos texted Fauci after an interview, praising him. Fauci conversed with NBC anchor Chuck Todd about handling conservative media. In July 2020, he noted forming a friendship with Tapper, detailing dinners with Tapper and his wife. Fauci also advised Tapper on questioning Trump adviser Brett Giroir during a CNN interview.

When networks began covering Fauci’s hearing, they seemed to act as his defenders. Beforehand, ABC’s Jay O’Brien on “Good Morning America” predicted a “fiery hearing” for Fauci, whom he portrayed as a target of Sen. Paul.
On “CBS Mornings,” Dr. Celine Gounder, a Biden transition adviser, argued Fauci never had the authority to shut down the country, which contradicted his previous statements about politicians heeding his advice. She denied his enjoyment of fame.
During NBC’s coverage, reporter Monica Alba quoted Fauci’s writings about his fame. Networks portrayed Paul negatively for releasing Fauci’s “private diaries,” although composed on a government computer.

“CBS Evening News” highlighted an “angry Senate hearing” where Paul expelled one of Fauci’s lawyers for attempting to answer on Fauci’s behalf. Democrats accused the GOP of bias. However, “CBS” included an interview with Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a Fauci critic, who discussed American support for “gain-of-function” research in China.
On Oct. 23, 2020, more entries arose: “Had dinner at my home with Jake and Jennifer Tapper. Relaxed, good time. Jake clearly believes that Trump is totally nuts.”
ABC’s Jay O’Brien described Fauci as a trusted figure during the pandemic. Fauci’s refusal to respond was depicted as unfortunate rather than defiant.
ABC’s George Stephanopoulos lamented the partisanship of the Fauci hearing, contrasting it with the January 6 hearings, which he presented as legitimate expressions of democracy.
Republican-led hearings, when mentioned, are framed as partisan conflicts; Democratic-led hearings are seen as high expressions of accountability. This skewed media portrayal contributes to public distrust.
