Luigi Mangione is back in court for a crucial hearing related to his murder trial in New York City. Mangione is accused of assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The case has sparked considerable public interest following the recovery of a gun and a notebook from Mangione, which contained writings about corporate America and the health insurance industry.
Karen Friedman Agnifilo, Mangione’s attorney, filed a new court document raising concerns over media access rules for the upcoming murder trial. Agnifilo argues these rules infringe on Mangione’s right to a public trial. Specifically, the court has decided to limit access to 68 journalists. Agnifilo contends this restriction is unconstitutional, suggesting the possibility of selective admission of reporters by the court or district attorney.
Constitutional Concerns Voiced by Defense
The legal team has cited three main objections which they claim amount to a constitutional breach:
- The partial closure of the trial by the court’s refusal to use an available overflow courtroom.
- The court and district attorney allegedly hand-picking journalists for attendance, providing no prior opportunity for the defense to voice its concerns.
Agnifilo stated her team was uninformed about the media access guidelines, only learning about them through an independent journalist. Reportedly, no overflow room will be provided and only six journalists will cover the jury selection, deviating from usual practice.
Request for Transparency and Broadcast
The defense demands a list of journalists selected, as well as the criteria behind these decisions. They seek details on attempts to secure an overflow courtroom and are requesting the trial to be broadcast live to ensure transparency.
Currently, Mangione’s federal trial is postponed until January of the following year. Fox News Digital contacted Agnifilo’s office for additional comments but has yet to receive a response.
