El Nino Intensifies, Warning of More Global Weather Extremes

Officials from the United Nations alert that the strengthening of El Nino has set new records for intensity during its early stages, potentially leading to more severe weather globally. Scientists from Columbia University report that a key Pacific Ocean zone used to assess El Nino strength reached its hottest and most intense level for 15 consecutive weeks since formation, indicating an early peak in its cycle. Typically, El Nino, known for warming Pacific waters near the equator and altering worldwide weather patterns, will reach full intensity in several months, expected to last until spring of 2027.

The World Meteorological Organization, a UN agency, warned that this will likely induce extreme heat, drought, and rainfall well into the next year. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated, “Two months ago, I warned that El Nino was arriving on our doorstep. Now it is inside the house — and turning up the heat,” during a Friday briefing. Summer has already showcased severity in the form of record-breaking heat domes, catastrophic wildfires across Europe, and loss of life due to extreme conditions. Guterres emphasized, “According to the latest science, this is only a warm-up act,” predicting further escalation as El Nino intensifies.

Researchers anticipate that this El Nino might set historic records for peak intensity, potentially reached by late fall, although this projection isn’t certain. Various forecasts agree with Guterres, pinpointing chaotic weather extremes from drought to intense heat as the phenomenon progresses over its roughly year-long cycle.

Columbia University climate scientist Jeffrey Shaman noted, “We’re seeing something that is the warmest July ever recorded for that specific region,” as an El Nino measure. “A year from now, it’s going to be very hot in the Northern Hemisphere. And we’re going to possibly have a summer like we’ve never experienced globally.” Before that, El Nino’s influence is likely to alter rainfall patterns, triggering extreme conditions in different global regions during fall and winter.

There is a high likelihood of drought and wildfires impacting places such as Indonesia, India, parts of Asia, southern and eastern Australia, regions of South America, and Southern Africa, according to the WMO. Other areas, including the United States and Southern Europe, may experience above-average rainfall.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo commented that El Nino offers a chance for communities and governments to anticipate risks arising from unprecedented ocean heat and rising temperatures. While El Nino and climate change are distinct, their combined effects result in perilous outcomes. UN Secretary-General Guterres pointed out that people do not fully grasp the impacts of accelerated climate shifts catalyzed by fossil fuels.

Amidst the ongoing focus on conflicts in Ukraine and other regions, climate dangers garner lesser attention, said Guterres, citing campaigns by the fossil fuel industry that downplay existing environmental challenges. He urged the UN to rally public opinion and prompt governments to acknowledge climate change as an existential threat.

Most of the heat from fossil fuels remains in the oceans until El Nino emerges, which subsequently releases some of the accumulated heat back into the atmosphere, noted Jeffrey Shaman. Despite the eventual end to this El Nino, released heat adds to air temperatures, subsequently rising with successive El Nino events.

Guterres advocated for building early warning systems and strategies to manage extreme heat, focusing on creating safer working conditions, especially in the garment industry employing 90 million individuals. In 17 of the 23 primary clothing production regions, instances of dangerously hot days rose by over 10% in two decades. Yet, many global brands lack heat standards for their suppliers. Guterres strongly urged, “The world must stop fueling the crisis… More coal, oil and gas will lead to a more combustible future.”

Overall, global efforts are crucial in mitigating the impacts of El Nino and advancing climate resilience.
