Sean Kaufman’s nomination for the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) moved forward with a 12-11 vote. The vote had faced a one-week delay due to attendance issues.
Leadership Needs
HELP Chair Bill Cassidy noted urgent public health challenges in the U.S., stressing the need for leadership at the CDC and ASPR. During Kaufman’s confirmation hearing, Cassidy acknowledged past controversies. He clarified that Kaufman’s confirmation would exclude him from vaccine policy and certain decisions.
“Mr. Kaufman has acknowledged past mistakes concerning immunization. If confirmed, he won’t influence vaccine policy or mRNA decisions,” stated Cassidy.
Opposition to Schwartz
Bernie Sanders expressed reservations about supporting Schwartz. Although impressed by her, he doubted her readiness to challenge unfounded theories promoted within the Health and Human Services Department.
“Our primary question: Are nominees prepared to oppose dangerous conspiracy theories?” Sanders questioned. “Unfortunately, I don’t believe Dr. Schwartz is prepared for that.”
