A Kansas physics teacher, Lux Claridge, refuses to be silenced after his arrest for allegedly disrupting a public hearing in Emporia about a proposed data center. Claridge, who teaches at Emporia High School, faced verbal warnings from city commissioners about conduct before his arrest, according to authorities.
Claridge allegedly interrupted proceedings, supporting opposition to the Flint Hills Digital Campus data center. When he refused orders to leave, officers reportedly carried him out. Claridge was arrested on charges of interference with law enforcement and disorderly conduct but was released after posting bail.
Speaking to KWCH, Claridge expressed relief at his release but affirmed his commitment to continue speaking out. He plans to plead not guilty in court in September.
Claridge attended the hearing with his wife, Jessica Danford, as the city approved zoning changes for the data center. Footage from the meeting shows him challenging an officer as he was removed.
“Seeing them carried out like that really was a lot to handle,” Danford remarked.
Friend Caleb Rankin expressed surprise at Claridge’s arrest. Claridge’s brother, David Claridge, remained confident the charges would not stand in court, criticizing the situation.
The arrest occurs amid an expansion of data centers and AI facilities, causing some opposition. Concerns have arisen nationwide about the long-term impacts of new data centers. Opposition groups have become more vocal.
Another resident at the meeting expressed fear that First Amendment rights might be compromised, highlighting a community sentiment of unease regarding government actions.
Emporia officials referred inquiries to police. The Emporia Police Department stressed the importance of maintaining orderly public meetings while respecting citizens’ rights.
