Authorities have confirmed a tragic incident involving a family in Grand Haven Township, Michigan. Last week, Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, his wife Amanda, 39, and their six children, aged 5 to 15, were found dead in their burning home. The event occurred on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Captain Jacob Sparks revealed on Monday that the family members died from gunshot wounds. Kristopher Karolkiewicz then took his own life. Investigators believe the fire was deliberately started in various parts of the house following the killings but are still determining its exact origin.
“The investigation at this point shows that this was a murder-suicide, with the fire being started after the murders,” Sparks stated. “The case remains open and under investigation to try to get to the bottom and get answers of what happened leading up to the incident.”
Kristopher Karolkiewicz had formerly served as vice president of sales and marketing for the American Heart Association until earlier this month. He worked remotely, managing CPR and first aid training and products, as detailed in a statement from the American Heart Association.
Amanda Karolkiewicz, known as Mandy, was engaged as a substitute teacher at Peach Plains Elementary School in Grand Haven. In a letter posted to the community, Superintendent Kristin Perkowski of Grand Haven Area Public Schools praised her contributions: “She served our students and staff with kindness, compassion, and a willingness to step in wherever she was needed.”
The couple’s relationship began at a beverage company in 2008, leading to their marriage in August 2009. They had a combined family of biological and adopted children. Amanda shared her devotion to her family and her faith through a personal blog, which she kept for several years.
In recent times, Mandy Karolkiewicz continued to post family updates through TikTok, capturing moments like a family trip to China.
Following the tragedy, a GoFundMe page has been set up by Amanda’s relatives to assist with expenses and create a scholarship in memory of the Karolkiewicz children. “This past weekend, our family experienced a tragedy beyond words,” the organizers mentioned, detailing the loss of their daughter and grandchildren.
