A 15-year-old is now in custody as authorities investigate a mass shooting that resulted in three deaths and multiple injuries at the Seattle Center. Mayor Katie Wilson stated that the teenager allegedly fired into a crowd, though details remain under investigation. Homicide charges have not been filed against the teen, who faces charges of firearms violations and first-degree assault. An initial court appearance is scheduled.
Seattle Police Department Chief Shon Barnes reported that gunfire was exchanged between two individuals near the Seattle Center Armory, causing several bystanders to be caught in the crossfire. The shooting is believed to be related to a conflict between two small groups.
Multiple people were injured after a floatplane made an emergency landing off the Washington Coast.
The police continue to search for a second suspect, though there’s a possibility that one of the dead may be involved. The deceased include a 19-year-old man and a 44-year-old man who died at the scene despite first responders’ efforts. A 56-year-old woman later died in the hospital. Four other victims sustained injuries, including a 2-year-old boy, who is now in satisfactory condition after being transported in stable condition. Others with minor injuries have been discharged.
Authorities are also checking if a 27-year-old man who went to the hospital himself is an eighth victim. Injuries treated at Harborview Medical Center involved limbs, the abdomen, and legs. Mayor Wilson described the incident as a “horrific act of violence,” lamenting that a community event was marred by gunfire.
The Bite of Seattle food festival was in progress at the time of the shooting. The mayor emphasized support for the affected families and a commitment to providing the public with accurate information.
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson received briefings and mentioned that State Patrol SWAT officers assisted the Seattle Police. He extended his prayers to the families, victims, and responders. Police and emergency units arrived shortly after 6 p.m. at the event location.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal expressed her horror, extending condolences to the victims’ families and gratitude to first responders. She urged for reflection on gun violence affecting not just Seattle, but the broader community. King County Executive Girmay Zahilay echoed the sentiment, underscoring the cultural significance of the event, traditionally a hallmark of Seattle’s summer.
Eyewitness Kayla Carris, 22, described the chaos as people sought safety, pushing and running into the Armory. Todd Behrends, 59, recounted hearing shots and witnessing a stampede, with one woman falling and getting stepped on during the commotion.
