Murakami, who had his parents in attendance throwing the first pitches, shared his joy. “I’m just really happy. To have a day like this, it means a lot,” he said through an interpreter. His parents hadn’t seen him play due to a previous injury, making the occasion memorable. “Just being out on the field today and getting the results in front of them is really speechless,” he added.
Murakami’s impressive day was part of a larger Sox offensive display featuring five home runs. Alongside Murakami, Miguel Vargas, Chase Meidroth, and Junior Perez also homered. This victory gives them a 2 1/2 game lead in the American League Central over the Cleveland Guardians as they go to a four-game series against the New York Yankees, which begins on Monday at Rate Field.
After missing 13 games without a homer, Murakami returned to form, driving in crucial runs. “It’s just about the results. It was going to come sooner or later,” Murakami commented. He hit a two-run homer in the first inning, lifting the Sox to an early lead before Timely hits throughout the game helped secure their win.
Right fielder Braden Montgomery also starred defensively, making a critical leaping catch to prevent a home run in the fourth inning. Sox starter Erick Fedde praised Montgomery’s poise, “Obviously big moment, saving runs is huge. Braden’s been great in right field.”
The Sox broke the tie in the sixth with Vargas’s two-run homer, his 22nd of the season. Meidroth’s seventh-inning homer further extended their lead. The offensive surge concluded with a two-run single and Murakami’s second homer in the ninth.
