Senator Dan Sullivan from Alaska is gearing up to contest Democrat Mary Peltola amid alleged efforts by Senate Democrats to intervene in the state’s key Senate race this fall. In an exclusive interview on the Ruthless Podcast, Sullivan voiced concerns about negative attacks from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other far-left groups.
Sullivan stated, “Schumer and the far-left groups have been saying that the majority goes through Alaska.” He highlighted the negative advertisements against him, which began in June of the previous year. “They pummeled me with negative ads for over a year,” he remarked.
The race drew national attention when Democrats reportedly recruited a retiree named Dan Sullivan to run against the incumbent, potentially confusing voters. Sullivan, a Marine veteran, called the new candidate a “far-left progressive” and accused him of using deceptive tactics involving his name and campaign symbols.
They recruit this guy; he’s a far-left progressive, far left. He’s got a list of donors, ActBlue, as I mentioned, Peltola, twice just in the last six months. He tried to take my middle initial; he actually signed up with the Division of Elections with my middle initial.
Podcast co-host Josh Holmes described this move as an attempt by Democrats to place a similarly named candidate on the ballot to siphon away votes. Holmes explained, “Even if it’s like, two, three, four or five percent on the ballot to get them into the margin where they can be competitive in a general election.”
Sullivan doesn’t believe this tactic will succeed. He noted his strong connection with voters during weekend parades and his team’s hard work.
Peltola, the leading candidate in the Democratic primary, has denied any involvement with the similar-name strategy. Peltola previously served in the House of Representatives following Don Young’s passing.
This upcoming race could determine control of the Senate, according to Fox News’ latest projection. The race is classified as a toss-up similar to those in Iowa, Maine, and Ohio. Currently, Republicans maintain a 53-to-47 lead in the Senate over Democrats and Independents.
The interview is part of the Ruthless Midterm Interview Series, which aims to feature major candidates nationwide. Voters in Alaska will vote in the primaries on August 18, with the general election scheduled for November 3.
