A police officer in Madison shot and killed a man who injured him with a knife while resisting arrest, according to Police Chief John Patterson. The man, who remains unidentified, was in his 30s. Patterson expressed condolences to the family of the deceased during a news conference.
Cellphone footage of the incident, which occurred on a city street near the state Capitol, has circulated on social media. The video captures three gunshots. Patterson emphasized that the footage provides only a single perspective. He urged the public to stay calm and recognize there is undisclosed video that will be reviewed in the investigation.
The area where the shooting took place is a bustling neighborhood with restaurants, bars, and residential homes. Many people witnessed the event as vehicles halted at an intersection.
Patterson said, “The situation escalates significantly when a weapon is introduced during an arrest. It becomes a dangerous environment for all involved.”
The shooting happened on the same street as a previous incident in 2015, where a white officer shot Tony Robinson, a biracial man. That event triggered large protests, but no charges were filed against the officer, who was deemed justified. Robinson’s family settled with the city for $3.35 million in 2017.
Advocates have stated that the man killed recently was Black. Brandi Grayson from Urban Triage stated, “Another Black man is dead on a Madison street, and our community watched him die before we even knew his name.”
A crowd assembled near the shooting site, some chanting for police accountability. Gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong joined the protesters, emphasizing support for peaceful assemblies. Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers stressed the need for transparency and accountability in the investigation, mentioning he is receiving updates on the situation.
Police responded to reports of someone attempting to enter parked vehicles. The suspect fled on a bike and was later confronted by officers. During the encounter, he injured an officer with a knife. Attempts to use a taser were unsuccessful. The injured officer then shot the suspect, who died in the hospital.
Patterson described the officer involved as a veteran, but shared minimal details. Witness accounts are being gathered, and investigators are working on piecing together the event. Other details about the knife and injuries sustained will be clarified as the investigation proceeds.
All four officers involved are on administrative leave as the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation handles the incident.
