France has experienced a significant increase in mortality rates during a recent severe heat wave, with over 5,700 excess deaths reported. Public Health France highlighted this as the most lethal summer heat wave in the country in over twenty years.
From June 17 to July 2, the nation anticipated 15,910 fatalities. Instead, it witnessed 21,674 deaths, marking a startling 36% increase, translating to 5,764 excess deaths. During this period, temperatures soared past 104 degrees Fahrenheit across various regions.

The heat wave disrupted daily life, occurring during a time when many people were still committed to work and school activities.
The rise in deaths affected hospitals, private residences, and nursing homes. The increase was most notable in individuals aged 45 and older. Adults aged 75 and above made up about two-thirds of the deaths, accounting for at least 3,719 extra deaths.
The Paris area suffered the most, with 1,999 excess deaths, exceeding expected numbers by over 80%. Public Health France confirmed that 2026 saw the highest excess mortality from heat since 2003, with reports of 15,000 more deaths than usual for that time of year.
On the hottest days – June 24 and June 25 – the average national temperature peaked at 86 degrees Fahrenheit, with some areas experiencing temperatures exceeding 104 degrees. More than half of the deaths occurred during the peak period from June 25 to June 27.
Officials also reported over 10,000 excess deaths in Europe during the worst part of the heat wave, with figures to be updated as more data become available. Funeral services in Paris were overwhelmed, managing a backlog of bodies due to the surge.
The mortality estimates include deaths from all causes during the heat wave and are subject to further refinement.
