Hasan Piker, a far-left Twitch streamer, addressed the College Democrats of America Summer Convention with fervor. He urged for a left-wing seizure of the Democratic Party, fervently opposing members who compromise. Minnesota Senate candidate Peggy Flanagan intensified this socialist rebellion, advocating for the dissolution of ICE. These events underscore the widening rifts within the Democratic Party’s structure.
Controversy surrounds Piker, amplified by a recent change in his live stream background. Observers noticed a framed newspaper front page from September 12, 2001, capturing the Twin Towers attack aftermath. Fox News Digital first identified this visual on July 13, where Piker commented on its significance during a broadcast.
“You might have noticed something new behind me… the Cutie Cinderella newspaper from 9/11, the morning of 9/12… is now officially sitting behind me,” Piker explained.
Piker’s past comments have been similarly controversial. In 2019, he claimed that “America deserved 9/11,” a statement he later clarified was a critique of U.S. foreign policies. Nevertheless, the remark drew significant backlash. He acknowledged the statement’s impropriety in a subsequent interview, attributing ensuing criticism to misrepresentation.
Piker’s influence has recently surged, notably speaking at the CDA convention in Washington, D.C., from July 17 to July 19. He joined other notable speakers, including David Hogg and Randi Weingarten. Yet, Piker bore the brunt of public scrutiny, criticized for attire resembling a Mao Zedong jacket and his critical remarks about Democrats.
“No more to the fascist reactionaries… who will fund ICE and Israel, poison the planet, stiff workers, and help bosses,” he declared.
The event’s sponsorship attracted attention, with J Street U, a campus arm of the left-leaning J Street organization, involved. Founder Jeremy Ben Ami addressed criticisms over their affiliation with Piker, clarifying their disagreement with his rhetoric.
“J Street U was proud to sponsor the College Democrats Convention… Being present is crucial even when disagreements exist,” Ben Ami commented.
Opposition to Piker’s convention speech emerged, including from DSA Watch, which he claimed was right-wing. The CDA Jewish Caucus also protested, labeling him as “antisemitic and misogynistic.” Their statement emphasized the threat his rhetoric posed to Jewish safety and representation. The Anti-Defamation League echoed these concerns.
“It’s deeply concerning to see political leaders normalize antisemitism rather than reject it,” the ADL wrote.
Despite these controversies, some Democrats like Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and State Assemblywoman Claire Valdez have collaborated with Piker. This alignment has sparked discussions within the Democratic Party over the balance between engaging young voters and the risks of endorsing Piker’s contentious views.
