The Chicago Blackhawks accomplished a major objective by extending Connor Bedard’s contract for five years at $75 million. This agreement ensures the young center remains with the team until the 2030-31 season, at which point he could become an unrestricted free agent. At 21, Bedard expressed his contentment with the deal during a video conference.
“Obviously it’s a relief and nice to get it done for myself and the team,” Bedard stated. “I don’t think there was any stress involved with it. We both knew it wasn’t going to take too many calls or meetings to get it done.”
Bedard emphasized his desire to play in Chicago, highlighting the camaraderie and potential he sees in the team’s young roster. He eagerly anticipates focusing on team performance once fully recovered from a shoulder injury incurred during practice in Vancouver.
This injury marks the third instance in four NHL seasons where Bedard won’t start the season due to health issues. Despite the setback, his approach remains positive, choosing to tackle recovery day by day.
“You’re just trying to figure out what the best steps are for myself…once it happens you can’t change it,” Bedard remarked.
At just under 21, Bedard holds various records for players under the age. With 203 points in 219 games, he surpassed Eddie Olczyk’s previous record of 180 points before turning 21. Last season, Bedard scored 75 points over 69 games, giving him a strong position in contract discussions.
Speculation suggested Bedard’s negotiations aligned with other players from his draft class. Leo Carlsson, the 2023 No. 2 pick, recently accepted a five-year, $90 million offer sheet with the Philadelphia Flyers, which the Anaheim Ducks matched. Despite these developments, Bedard maintained confidence in his original stance.
“He was happy with the original position that we had submitted to Chicago and negotiated,” his agent, Don Meehan, shared.
Bedard also addressed his agent’s comments. The $15 million annual value of his contract sets a new record in Blackhawks history and stands as the third largest in the NHL today.
Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson made significant roster changes by acquiring defenseman Bowen Byram, along with signing left wing Cole Smith and defenseman Ian Cole. Bedard took proactive steps to welcome these new players, showcasing leadership qualities and excitement for the team’s future.
“Getting (Byram), he’s someone who’s going to be one of the best D-men in the league,” Bedard remarked.
Additionally, Bedard showed interest in potentially gaining the captaincy, considering it a special honor, while his efforts focused on team improvements.
Speculation surrounds unrestricted free agent Patrick Kane, with Hockey Hall of Famer Chris Chelios noting Kane’s decision between the Hawks and Sabres. Bedard expressed hope for Kane’s return to the Blackhawks, believing his presence would positively impact the team and fans alike.
“I hope so,” Bedard said about Kane’s possible comeback.
