Jury selection commenced on Monday in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children while experiencing severe psychiatric issues post-childbirth. This trial is set to last several weeks and will delve into the rare condition of postpartum psychosis. This condition, affecting a minority of women after childbirth, results in delusions and sometimes hallucinations.
Defense attorney Kevin Reddington, representing Clancy, acknowledges her responsibility in the deaths but intends to employ an insanity defense strategy. He described the situation as an ‘extreme tragedy.’ Clancy’s spouse, Patrick Clancy, along with her lawyers, argue that she should not be held accountable for her actions.
Prosecutors, however, assert that the homicides were deliberate and organized. Clancy, who formerly worked as a labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges of her children: Cora (5), Dawson (3), and Callan (8 months), who died on January 24, 2023.

On the day of the tragic incident, Clancy, now 36, requested her husband to run errands, procuring food and medicine. During his absence, she strangled her children using exercise bands, then attempted multiple methods to end her life. She survived a fall from a second-story window but was left paralyzed, and now remains in a state hospital.
Patrick Clancy, a witness for both sides of the trial, has publicly expressed his forgiveness towards his wife. The jury selection is ongoing in Plymouth, a location near the family’s Duxbury home, a coastal suburb around 30 miles south of Boston.
Both Lindsay and Patrick Clancy have filed lawsuits against her medical providers, accusing them of inadequate diagnosis and treatment of her postpartum psychiatric condition. Reports indicate that Clancy had been hospitalized briefly prior to the murders, dealing with depression, insomnia, and auditory hallucinations encouraging self-harm.
Lindsay Clancy, according to the lawsuit, actively sought help by visiting emergency rooms, admitting herself to psychiatric hospitals, and adhering to prescribed medications. She communicated her deteriorating state to healthcare providers, expressing that the medications were worsening her condition.
Reports from that fateful day reveal Clancy heard voices instructing her, “This is your last chance. Kill the children so you can kill yourself.” She was also told, “her children would suffer if she was gone,” according to Patrick Clancy’s lawsuit, citing medical records.
Patrick Clancy shared a heartfelt message through GoFundMe days after the killings, articulating his ‘excruciating and relentless’ grief. He requested the public to remember his wife as a loving and caring person prior to the tragedy, stating, “The real Lindsay was generously loving and caring toward everyone.” He expressed his hope for her to find peace.
