Her dismembered body was found in a Tesla in the Hollywood Hills, and a court order sealed the autopsy in the investigation leading to murder charges against singer D4vd.
D4vd, who pleaded not guilty, is approaching a preliminary hearing to determine if there is enough evidence for a trial. Dr. Ukpo’s agency, which confirmed Rivas Hernandez’s death as caused by stab wounds, plays a major role as it does in other cases such as the deaths of “Friends” star Matthew Perry and director Rob Reiner. In an interview, Dr. Ukpo expressed his aim to maintain the office’s independence from police and prosecutors, emphasizing his office’s role in publicizing death information promptly and accurately.
The Challenge of Secrecy
Dr. Ukpo criticized the practice of sealing autopsy reports, believing this hampers rather than aids investigations. “That goes completely against our mission,” he stated, noting the importance of releasing information to help understand what made Hernandez vulnerable. The Reiners’ case remains sealed by court order, despite claims from authorities that their son is responsible.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department claims that such security holds are rare and carefully reviewed to preserve investigative information.
Los Angeles Police Department and the district attorney’s office did not comment on the matter.

Appointed as chief medical examiner in 2023, Ukpo became the agency’s first Black leader since 1850. The title “coroner” was dropped soon after, reinforcing the agency’s independence. He acknowledged the potential for bias among examiners who routinely cooperate with law enforcement, but stressed the importance of maintaining some distance without completely severing ties.
Path to a Forensic Pathologist
Ukpo’s fascination with forensic pathology began at age six when he aspired to be a homicide detective. He later admired his family physician’s ability to balance hands-on work and professionalism, drawing him towards pathology. His education took him to institutions like Loyola University and the Mayo Clinic.

Ukpo has handled the autopsies of numerous celebrities, including rapper Mac Miller and actor Tommy Lister Jr. Perry’s death highlighted the dangers of ketamine, underscoring Ukpo’s goal to serve public interest. “Death reverberates,” he explained, aiming to focus on community impact during his leadership.
