Conor McGregor recently shared details about his injury during his brief return to the UFC octagon on July 11 in Las Vegas. He suffered a defeat by technical knockout to Max Holloway in UFC 329. McGregor described the injury as “quite shocking” and has now revealed that it involved both the ACL and meniscus in his right knee.
In a post on social media platform X, McGregor wrote, “Update: it was acl and meniscus.” He noted that this was similar to an injury he suffered in a previous fight with Holloway, but this time it occurred on the opposite leg. Despite the setback, McGregor is optimistic about his recovery.
McGregor faced Holloway 13 years ago before achieving international fame in mixed martial arts. He expressed his surprise that such an injury would happen again so many years later. However, McGregor is maintaining a positive attitude about his recovery prospects.
“With today’s advancements in regenerative medicine and training methods, I aim to return by next summer,” McGregor stated. He added that he can walk without a crutch and perform leg extension exercises without issues. “I am maximum discipline and have maintained it fully since the bout,” he said.
McGregor also reflected on the incident, saying, “I wonder was I saved from something worse here. I believe so.” He emphasized the importance of health and thanked fans for their support, saying, “On we go, no sad stories. Thank you for the support and well wishes everyone, your health is your wealth.”
The fight was cut short when McGregor attempted a jumping roundhouse kick and landed awkwardly, resulting in immediate grabbing of his right knee. Max Holloway capitalized on the situation, ultimately leading to McGregor’s TKO loss.
Referee Mike Beltran stopped the fight just seconds into the first round, giving Holloway the victory. McGregor was visibly upset afterward. He tweeted, “My head gasket is gone. Destroyed,” expressing his frustration and surprise over the injury.
McGregor’s team even released footage from the locker room showing him successfully practicing the same kick before the fight. Despite the setback bringing his UFC record to 22-7, McGregor appears determined to continue his fighting career.
