The Health Benefits of Daylight Exposure
Recent research indicates that more daylight exposure can promote earlier sleep onset and deeper nighttime sleep. A study from the University of Manchester highlights that adults experiencing brighter and more consistent daytime light tend to fall asleep and wake up earlier.
“Spending time in bright daylight can aid in falling asleep earlier and having deeper sleep,” reports the study.
The study analyzed over 500 days of data from 89 adults using light sensors and sleep trackers.
Understanding Light’s Impact on Sleep
Jennifer Martin, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and professor at Florida International University, explains the relationship between light exposure and the body’s internal clock. Light exposure in the morning is particularly beneficial for maintaining a stable sleep routine.
“Light impacts sleep through the retina, signaling the brain to stay alert,” Martin notes.
Experts recommend morning outdoor activities to align with the body’s sleep-wake cycle.
Improving Sleep Through Light Management
To enhance sleep quality, Martin suggests avoiding bright lights in the evening and keeping a consistent morning schedule. Morning light exposure promotes routine sleepiness at night.
Martin advises minimizing variations in wake times to avoid disrupting regular sleep patterns.
She emphasizes the importance of maintaining at least seven hours of sleep and seeking professional assistance for chronic sleep issues.
Study Limitations
The study shows a correlation between daylight exposure and sleep patterns but does not establish a direct causation. Limitations include reliance on wrist-worn devices instead of measuring light at the eyes, and not considering factors like physical activity or meal timing.
