According to insiders, F.B.I. managers nationwide received a notice on Thursday indicating the bureau would cease investigating assault claims against Department of Homeland Security agents. These investigations are crucial for determining if officers were attacked and for gathering evidence against the agents themselves.
However, a joint statement from the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security refuted any policy change. They stated, “The relationship between D.H.S. and D.O.J. in investigating assault on federal officer cases has not changed, and F.B.I. will continue to investigate in accordance with agency policy.” They emphasized the administration’s commitment to prosecuting anyone assaulting law enforcement officers.
