First on Fox News: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is urging Florida officials to hand over a Bangladeshi illegal immigrant accused of murdering his sister-in-law. This individual was deported during the Trump administration, illegally returned to the U.S., and was later released by the Biden administration.
According to DHS, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer against Akbor Miah, allegedly using the alias Shahidul Islam. ICE is requesting his transfer into federal custody after his state criminal proceedings conclude.
Miah initially entered the U.S. in 2016 during the Obama administration, was arrested by ICE in February 2018, and subsequently received a final order of removal. Despite being deported to Bangladesh in January 2019, during Trump’s presidency, Miah illegally reentered the U.S.—a federal felony—and was released on March 19, 2022, under the Biden administration.
Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty for Deported Immigrant
Monica Islam was discovered fatally shot in Lake County, Florida, in May 2025. Her brother-in-law has been charged with first-degree murder. DHS stated ICE filed a detainer requesting Florida officials transfer Miah into federal custody post-state criminal proceedings. This action will ensure he confronts immigration enforcement following any sentence in the murder case.
Authorities report Monica Islam vanished after leaving a convenience store in Eustis, where she worked with Miah on May 2, 2025. Hours later, her body was found in Mount Dora with a gunshot wound.
Evidence, including Monica Islam’s DNA, a bullet lodged in Miah’s vehicle door, and shattered passenger window, was recovered, prosecutors stated.
Arrest Highlights Sanctuary Policy Concerns
Miah, who also used the alias Shahidul Islam, was charged with first-degree murder. ICE’s detainer seeks custody after the state criminal proceedings. Officials allege Miah fled to New York post-murder but was captured by the U.S. Marshals Service and extradited back to Florida.

Thanks to our law enforcement partners, this criminal is now off our streets. ICE has lodged a detainer to ensure he remains in custody.”
A Lake County grand jury indicted Miah on premeditated first-degree murder, with prosecutors pursuing the death penalty. State Attorney Bill Gladson revealed evidence of suspicious internet searches conducted by Miah on the day of the murder.
After the murder, Miah allegedly rented a vehicle and drove to New York, but authorities tracked him through coordinated efforts involving local, state, and federal law enforcement.
