Closure Announcement
Roycemore School, a private preK-12 institution located in Evanston, will close before the start of the 2026-27 academic year. Despite concerted efforts by parents, board members, and administrators to save the school, the Board of Trustees has decided to suspend operations due to a substantial drop in enrollment during a period of financial instability.
Fundraising Efforts
In an attempt to keep the 111-year-old school alive, parents organized fundraisers and alumni were approached for donations. Administrators sought benefactors willing to contribute, but ultimately these efforts could not secure the school’s future. The Board shared in a message to the community on July 15 that they had to make the difficult decision after reviewing enrollment data and financial projections.
Financial Challenges
A sudden decline in confirmed student enrollment led to the decision. Although fundraising progress was made, enrollment numbers fell well below what was necessary to sustain academic programs and financial health. While a late financial reprieve from a donor allowed the school to complete the 2025-26 year, it did not cover future operating costs.
Conditions and Requirements
The donor had outlined conditions including potential building sale or school merger, and stipulations for tuition payments. Families needed to provide at least half of their July 1 tuition by May 25 for further funding consideration. Also, most signed tuition contracts had to be retained for funding agreements.
“This decision was made only after every reasonable alternative had been explored,” the Board stated. “Ultimately, we could not responsibly open the school without the resources needed to deliver high-quality education.”
Next Steps for Families
Administrators are working to ensure smooth transitions for students. A dedicated process for transferring transcripts and records is being established. Families will receive communication regarding tuition reimbursements. Interim Head of School Paul Druzinsky expressed sadness over the closure affecting many community members.
Leadership Transitions
Druzinsky was appointed in July to help manage the closure process, following leadership changes earlier in the year. Former head Christopher English’s removal and interim roles reshuffle came amidst broader administrative alterations.
Community Support
Druzinsky praised the community’s efforts to save the school. Parents and leaders worked tirelessly, although challenging, showing support that exceeded expectations. Particularly he mentioned ongoing efforts to assist families in finding new schools for their children.
The possibility of reopening Roycemore after the closure remains remote, given the complexities involved in reversing the shutdown process. Despite this, the sentiment of hope persists among those involved.
