Iran’s principal negotiator, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, hinted on Wednesday that talks with the United States remain possible, despite a resurgence in hostilities between the two nations. On the same day, Ghalibaf released a comprehensive statement expressing a defiant attitude. While emphasizing Iran’s readiness to defend itself both on the battlefield and at the negotiation table, he stressed the importance of using diplomacy to safeguard national interests.
Ghalibaf, a significant figure seen as a pragmatic conservative in Iran, articulated his stance through a televised address. His message came shortly after the U.S. launched aerial attacks on Iranian military installations and key infrastructure, including rail networks and ports, causing considerable damage. In response, Iran fired ballistic missiles and deployed drones against American bases in the Middle East. With both Tehran and Washington declaring the ceasefire null and void, tensions over the Strait of Hormuz escalated, affecting oil and gas shipments. Iran asserted the strait’s closure, while the U.S. military enforced a naval blockade along Iran’s southern coast.
Despite the renewed conflict, Ghalibaf suggested potential for diplomatic engagement. He stressed the necessity of aligning military actions with diplomatic efforts, expressing no fear of either war or negotiations. Ghalibaf underscored that dialogues at this juncture do not equate to surrender but are a strategy for advancing national interests.
