In a game between the Phillies and San Francisco Giants, Bottalico hit Bonds with a pitch, inciting the only time Bonds charged the mound. Bottalico has maintained that his actions were intentional, despite public narratives at the time.
Duncan highlighted that Bottalico had claimed the pitch accidentally slipped. However, Bonds refuted this. “No, it didn’t, it did not get away,” Bonds stated. “He’s a good pitcher and a good man. At that time, it was part of the game, and I accepted it.”
Bottalico clarified his actions during an appearance on 97.5 The Fanatic. “That is a bold-faced lie,” he remarked, asserting that he was directed to hit Bonds. He emphasized, “I’ve shared this story multiple times. I was told to go in and hit Barry Bonds. It’s that simple.”
Regarding the incident’s aftermath, Bottalico explained that confessing the truth publicly at the time would have led to severe consequences. “The next day in the newspapers, I had to say I didn’t do it on purpose or face a month’s suspension.” His coaches advised discretion, urging him not to admit intent.
Bottalico further detailed the team’s frustration with Bonds, who had stolen a base with the Giants already leading by seven runs. Remarkably, Bottalico wasn’t scheduled to pitch due to recent surgery and pitching the previous night.
Bottalico’s career saw him make one All-Star appearance in 1996, boasting a 3.65 ERA in 69 appearances. His tenure with the Phillies lasted five years before transitioning to various teams.
