LeBron James has become a free agent for the first time in eight years, attracting interest from multiple NBA teams for his final career phase. At 41, he stands poised for a possible new beginning with either the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Golden State Warriors. According to Alex Schiffer of Front Office Sports, the Warriors may be leading the race.
Schiffer reports, “Multiple Western Conference executives suggest James is likely to join the Warriors over the Cavaliers for his 24th NBA season.” Although Cleveland remains a favorite in prediction markets, and despite Bill Simmons labeling the move as a ‘done deal,’ executives recognize Golden State as a serious contender.
James, from Akron, was drafted first overall by the Cavaliers in 2003. His career includes significant moves, notably “The Decision” in 2010 when he left Cleveland for Miami Heat, securing two NBA titles and two MVP awards there. In 2014, he returned to Cleveland, leading the Cavaliers in intense contests against the Warriors from 2014 to 2018. During this period, the Warriors secured three championships, with the Cavaliers triumphing in 2016.
Joining the Los Angeles Lakers in July 2018, James earned his fourth championship in 2020. He exited the Lakers on June 30, expressing gratitude in response to the team’s statement. “No, THANK YOU!” he wrote, honoring the legacy and expressing pride in his tenure with emojis depicting a purple and yellow heart, prayer hands, salute, and crown.
Speculation surrounds his next move, with the prospect of returning to Cleveland, where his journey began, seen as fitting. However, the allure of playing alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, under coach Steve Kerr, in the Bay Area holds undeniable appeal.
