A man carrying a firearm was arrested on Monday after driving to a security barricade outside the U.S. Capitol. This incident led to a police investigation and a temporary shutdown of part of the Capitol grounds.
The U.S. Capitol Police reported that officers detained the man at the North Barricade once they identified he was armed. Firearms are not allowed on the Capitol Grounds, prompting an immediate area closure for investigation.
A spokesperson for the Capitol Police stated, “Our investigators are working to learn more about the suspect and why he drove to the U.S. Capitol.” As of now, the identity of the suspect hasn’t been disclosed, and no charges have been filed against him.
Officers remained at the scene throughout Monday afternoon. They were observed removing items, such as water bottles, from a Ford Bronco that was parked in front of the barricade.
A dog found inside the vehicle was safely removed and taken away by the SPCA. The North Barricade continued to be closed while the investigation was underway.
