The exhibition titled “Stretching the Canvas: Ten Decades of Native Painting” at the National Museum of the American Indian explores the evolution of Native painting since World War I. This exhibition highlights the artistic contributions and innovation by Native artists over the past century.
One of the notable works featured is “Spatial Whorl” (1949-1950) by Native American artist Dick West. West embraced modernist abstraction, employing a vibrant palette to create dynamic compositions.
Historically, paintings by Native American artists have not frequently appeared in Washington, D.C.’s museums. Native artists have often been limited to categories labeled as “crafts,” including textiles and ceramics. In 1953, the National Gallery of Art presented the exhibition “Contemporary American Indian Painting,” but there has been limited focus on Native painters since then.
More recently, in 2023, the National Gallery of Art organized “The Land Carries Our Ancestors,” an exhibition featuring contemporary Native artwork. While it included paintings, it did not offer a comprehensive survey of Native painting.
