“He did not deserve to die. He should not have been reduced to a mere headline,” his son expressed during a news conference. “He deserved recognition as a husband, a father, and a job provider committed to the American dream.” The shooting transpired in Magnolia Park, a historical hub for the Mexican American community. Salgado Araujo’s family highlighted their loss during a Wednesday news conference in Houston.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that Salgado Araujo was shot after disregarding officer commands and attempting to ram the officer’s vehicle. ICE officers targeted him due to his undocumented status in the U.S. DHS mentioned his car struck an ICE vehicle. “The driver was shot, and emergency services were contacted immediately,” the agency stated. Houston has faced intensified ICE operations with community resistance, resulting in a brief ordinance limiting ICE’s local cooperation before it faced threats of reduced state funding.
