Graham Platner, previously the Democratic Senate nominee in Maine, announced his withdrawal from the race on Wednesday. This decision came after an ex-girlfriend accused him of rape, allegations he has denied. Platner’s exit has sparked significant discourse and responses from prominent figures in Maine and across the country.
Platner, a populist Democrat previously endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, was running against Republican Sen. Susan Collins in a crucial race that could determine the Senate’s majority following the midterms. He released a video stating, “For the movement to continue, it can’t be me. For that reason, we are suspending campaign operations.” This announcement was made just days before a key deadline that would have hindered the Maine Democratic Party from replacing him on the ballot had he not withdrawn in time.
Platner had previously captured the Democratic nomination in Maine with a substantial primary victory on June 9. However, controversy quickly emerged when a woman alleged he had sexually assaulted her. The report surfaced shortly before the campaign suspension and stirred considerable political upheaval. Platner addressed the allegations in the report, emphatically denying them.
Platner remarked, “This is all false. The things that have been claimed did not happen. It is not real.”
At the center of the controversy was Jenny Racicot, who described Platner’s conduct as assaultive during interviews with Politico and CNN. Racicot also noted a “moral conflict” between supporting Platner’s politics but not him as an individual.
Alongside Racicot’s accusations were additional claims from Lyndsey Fifield, who alleged Platner engaged in misconduct during their relationship, claims he also disputed. These allegations heightened scrutiny against Platner, ultimately leading to his withdrawal.
Platner’s campaign was further plagued by past contentious online remarks and publicized incidents that overshadowed his primary victory. His history of controversy included inflammatory comments on Reddit, a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, and alleged inappropriate conduct with various women, which he has consistently denied.
The deadline for Platner’s withdrawal meant the Maine Democratic Party could now select a new nominee by July 27. Top Democrats, including Sen. Chuck Schumer and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, urged Platner to step down due to the gravity of the allegations and emphasized the need for a candidate who could successfully oppose Collins.
Sen. Sanders, initially supportive, also advised Platner to leave the race, emphasizing the severity of the situation. The withdrawal impacted ongoing support from national groups and notable Democrats, who rescinded endorsements following the allegations.
Platner’s campaign success had been notable due to effective fundraising and support from progressive leaders, but the controversies prevailed over his candidacy. While polls previously suggested a competitive race against Sen. Collins, Platner’s departure has shifted the dynamics, leaving the Maine Democrats to reassess their strategy as the election nears.
