After 48 years in Hollywood, George Clooney will be honored at the Venice Film Festival in September. Known for his work in over 50 films, Clooney is among Hollywood’s top-grossing actors. He will receive the Golden Lion, a Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his impact on cinema.
The Venice Film Festival, one of the industry’s major events, will occur in Lido di Venezia from September 2 to 12. A statement from Venice Biennale, as reported by Variety, praises Clooney: “A perfect combination of the star glamour of days gone by, remarkable professionalism, and modern sensitivity. The actor has crossed genres with rare versatility.” His films span various genres, from war movies like ‘Three Kings’ and ‘Syriana’ to thrillers such as ‘Michael Clayton’. Clooney is also known for comedies like ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ and ‘O Brother Where Art Thou?’, as well as science fiction like ‘Gravity’ and ‘Solaris’. Bittersweet comedies include ‘The Descendants’, ‘Up In the Air’, and ‘Jay Kelly.’
The statement highlights his consistent performances: “In each one of these movies, he calibrated his register while remaining true to himself: ironic and melancholy, fascinating and reflective, brilliant and capable of unexpected depth.” Clooney’s influence extends beyond acting and producing to directing. He is one of only three individuals nominated for Oscars in six different categories, including best picture, director, lead actor, supporting actor, original screenplay, and adapted screenplay, alongside Alfonso Cuaron and Kenneth Branagh.
The Italian festival also acknowledges Clooney’s societal contributions and his “commitment to social and humanitarian causes,” positioning him as a significant figure in entertainment.
Clooney, a regular at the festival, expressed, “I’ve had so many extraordinary moments in Venice. This festival is without question my favorite and to be given the Golden Lion is a tremendous honor.” At 65, Clooney humorously commented, “It also probably means I’m old, but I’ll take it.”
His last screen appearance was in 2025 in the comedy-drama ‘Jay Kelly’, where he starred alongside Adam Sandler, Billy Crudup, and Laura Dern.
