US Faces Belgium Without Key Player as Balogun Receives Red Card

The U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) is preparing for its most significant match in history against Belgium in the Round of 16 at the World Cup. However, the team faces a major challenge without one of its standout players, Folarin Balogun. He will miss the crucial game due to a red card received in a previous match.

During the earlier Round of 32 matchup against Bosnia, Balogun became entangled with an opponent while chasing a loose ball. The incident resulted in Balogun stepping on the opponent’s ankle, causing an awkward roll. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewed the play, and Balogun’s actions were deemed severe enough to warrant a red card. This not only led to his ejection but also meant that the U.S. had to continue with ten players and would be without Balogun for the next game against Belgium.

In his first statements since the incident, Balogun expressed his disagreement with the referee’s decision. “First and foremost, it was totally unintentional, which I’m sure a lot of people know,” he said. “The referee’s choice, I believe, was incorrect. I think a yellow card would have been fair, given the lack of intent. But it’s something I have to accept and move forward from.”

Despite his absence, Balogun emphasized the importance of maintaining composure and setting a good example for younger fans. “It’s been an emotional time, but staying calm is crucial. There are many people watching, including young boys and girls. We have to show them the right way to handle these situations, even when you believe it’s unjust,” he added.

No protests can be made regarding the referee’s decisions connected with play. These decisions are final and cannot be appealed, unless otherwise stated in the FIFA Disciplinary Code. – Article 9.6 of the 2026 World Cup regulations

According to FIFA’s rules, any player receiving a direct or indirect red card faces automatic suspension from their team’s subsequent match. However, FIFA confirmed that Balogun’s suspension is limited to the Belgium game. If the U.S. progresses, he will be eligible to return in the quarterfinals.
