Authorities reported that two Chicago police officers were shot on Friday evening in the South Shore neighborhood. The incident took place around 5 p.m. near East 79th Street and South Chappel Avenue. Both officers were transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, according to Larry Merritt, spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department. Additionally, a civilian was also taken to the hospital. Their conditions are yet to be disclosed.
The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear. However, a police source familiar with the investigation mentioned that exchanges of gunfire occurred following a traffic stop. One officer received a blow to the vest. The other officer was struck in the arm.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability has announced that it is investigating the officer-involved shooting near 2000 East 79th Street.
