Amid protests in Washington D.C., officials highlighted significant outcomes achieved from the National Guard’s deployment, during a ceremony that honored troops along with the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force.
Commendations for Guard Members
At the event held at Meridian Hill Park, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth commended National Guard members. He stated they had successfully contributed to a substantial reduction in the city’s crime rates. Hegseth called the decrease “staggering,” underscoring the impact of the year-long presence of troops in the city.

Protests and Criticisms
While the accolades were being presented, protesters gathered nearby to express their discontent with the prolonged presence of troops. Concerns have been raised regarding the necessity and efficacy of maintaining such a deployment within the city.
The ceremony saw key figures including White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, and Gen. Steven Nordhaus, Chief of the National Guard Bureau, who supported the positive remarks of Hegseth.
Despite the criticisms, officials remain steadfast in their belief that the deployment has significantly contributed to the enhancement of safety in D.C.
