In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, more than two million troops from both sides have suffered casualties, marking a significant milestone in this prolonged battle. According to a new study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, Russia has faced a heavier burden, with 1.4 million soldiers either killed or injured since the invasion into Ukraine in February 2022.
The study indicates that of the Russian casualties, 450,000 individuals have died. This number is notably high, being four times greater than all U.S. military fatalities in conflicts since World War II.
On the Ukrainian side, military forces have recorded between 525,000 and 625,000 casualties. Among these, the study estimates that around 125,000 to 150,000 have been deaths.
There are challenges in accurately estimating these figures due to Moscow’s tendency to underreport its losses, while Ukraine has chosen not to disclose official numbers. The study utilized information from sources such as American and British government estimates to compile its findings.
These statistics highlight the slow advancement of Russian troops within Ukrainian territory. In some areas, progress is measured at under 165 feet per day. However, in February, Ukraine showcased an offensive in the south, managing to gain more ground than it lost for the first month since 2023, as reported by analysis.
