Cleveland Guardians left fielder Cooper Ingle experienced a notable lapse during the game against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night. The error occurred when the game was tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
With a Texas runner on second base and one out, Alejandro Osuna of the Rangers hit a fly ball to Ingle. Ingle caught the ball for the second out, but mistakenly believed he had completed the inning. He then threw the baseball into the stands at Progressive Field. This mistake allowed Rangers runner Ezequiel Duran to advance home, giving Texas the lead.
The Rangers ultimately won the game 4-2. Ingle’s performance at the plate was also challenging, as he finished 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
Ingle made his major league debut just the previous Friday against the Seattle Mariners. This season, he was ranked 99th on MLB’s top 100 prospects list and was listed as the third-best prospect within the Guardians’ organization. Despite his inexperience, Ingle took responsibility for the mistake and assured reporters he would avoid similar errors in the future.
Following the game, both the Guardians and the Rangers held identical records of 44-42. Ingle expressed his regret over the incident, stating, “Obviously you feel terrible,” as reported by MLB.com.
