Victor Willis of the Village People Dies at 74

Victor Willis, aged 74, known as the lead singer of the iconic 1970s disco group Village People, has died. His band announced this on Wednesday through their official Facebook page.

“We are profoundly sad to announce the death of VICTOR WILLIS, lead singer of Village People,” the statement read. “Victor passed on Tuesday June 30, 2026 of a short but aggressive illness. Privacy is requested,” it added.

Willis, born in Texas, played a crucial role as a co-founder and the original lead vocalist of the Village People. He was instrumental in writing many of the group’s songs and became widely recognized for his police officer persona, especially in the hit single “YMCA.”

Willis left the Village People in 1979 with aspirations of pursuing a solo music career.

Willis remains celebrated for his contributions to disco music and his unique character in the music scene of the 1970s.
