Overview of America’s Greatest Achievements
As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, a recent NBC News poll sponsored by More Perfect, a nonprofit focused on advancing democracy, sheds light on what Americans consider the country’s most notable accomplishments. The poll was unique in being open-ended, allowing respondents to freely express their thoughts. The responses largely fell into three categories: expansion of rights, military achievements, and scientific advancements.
Expansion of Rights
Two-thirds of respondents highlighted events tied to the expansion of rights. Among these, both the abolition of slavery and the ratification of the 13th Amendment were commonly cited. The 1865 amendment formally ended slavery, freeing over 4 million enslaved individuals. A Texas man noted, “The abolition of slavery was a magnificent achievement for us. I think one of our strengths was we used to make laws to help people.” Many agree that this amendment laid the groundwork for equal opportunities in America.
Responses also emphasized further expansions of rights, such as the 19th Amendment in 1920, which granted voting rights to women. A California educator remarked, “When the women got the right to vote, there’s more opportunity to further people’s education than there used to be.” The enactment of Title IX in 1972 is also noted for prohibiting gender discrimination in federally funded institutions.
Military Achievements
A segment of respondents chose military successes, particularly America’s role in World War II. This victory is seen as pivotal in preserving democratic values. A Washington man mentioned, “The war preserved our values – it changed the direction of the world, and it helped preserve our Western values.” Victory was seen by some as preventing a dictator-led world.
For others, World War II symbolized a unified nation and meaningful patriotism. A Virginia man lamented current political leadership while reflecting on post-war unity. “The United States is a joke in the eyes of the world right now because of our current leader,” he commented. The triumph in World War II is also viewed as emphasizing America’s military strength on the global stage.
Scientific Advancements
Scientific achievements such as space exploration were also valued. The Apollo missions and the moon landing highlight America’s technological prowess. An Idaho respondent remarked, “Probably putting a man on the moon. The Apollo missions. I mean, technology at the time wasn’t exactly very good. I don’t know how they did it, but they put somebody up there.” This embodies American ingenuity in science and technology.
Looking ahead, NASA’s Artemis program plans to return to the moon, continuing the legacy of space exploration. Some view this endeavor as emblematic of American creativity and democracy’s fruitfulness.
